Merchant Navy Officers Pension Fund
JOINING AND REJOINING THE MNOPF
The MNOPF was closed to new members on 1 November 1996. Officers who were contributing members before that date stay members as long as they are eligible. In certain cases, set out below, other officers may join or rejoin the MNOPF. If you think one of these cases may apply to you, get in touch with MNPA as soon as you can.
Changing Employer If you are a contributing member and leave your present employer, you can rejoin if within twelve months of your last contribution you start work with another employer who participates in the MNOPF.
Looking for a New Employer If you are a contributing member and leave your present employer, but do not start work with another participating employer within twelve months, you can pay voluntary contributions. To do this, you must be actively seeking further sea-going employment with a participating employer and you must apply within twelve months of your last contribution. While paying voluntary contributions, you have the right to rejoin the MNOPF if you obtain sea-going employment with a participating employer. You can pay voluntary contributions for up to three years.
MERCHANT NAVY OFFICERS PENSION PLAN
If you are not able to join or rejoin the MNOPF, you may be able to join the Merchant Navy Officers Pension Plan ("MNOPP"). This is open to officers, cadets and trainees who work for an employer that participates in the Plan and are aged 18 or over. To find out more, go to the MNOPP page on this site.
